Good Reads: The Star in Yellow

Archive

Read this ages ago, never made a post about it. The story made an impact, I can say that much. Whenever Twilight opens a book in the show, my boyfriend and I now have an in-joke for it:

Oh hey there Yellowstar.

So now to write a review from a hazy memory! Um... this'll be a short one.

This story is actually pretty fun, and despite, you know, being about insanity. It's actually somewhat light, especially the B plot. Sometimes when a story is split in half between two major actions, one tends to be more interesting than the other, and I wind up skipping over one of the parts. But the two parallel threads in this story are both very good for very different reasons, and my attention was held by both of them.

I remember the only really weird part was the heavy focus on the OC, Saddle Stitch. I mean, he was a well-written character, and was pretty funny himself. I could see his point and purpose in the story. But he's treated like a main character, and a show-sealer at that. It felt... very weird to read. Again, well written, soooo Your Mileage May Vary.

Score: Even a month later, its still worth talking about.

Fostering Intelligence

A lot of my writing is pretty light-hearted I'd say. Or... more like I always look for opportunities to take the piss out on myself, on a situation.

This is... not like that.

And it makes me kind've nervous to post.

But I wrote it. And now I can focus on more important things.

Like more fanfiction.

Oh, and I have a FimFiction account now

Babble: Acceptable Friendshipping

I've mashed out over 4k words today, and flipping through what's still left to be done, I wouldn't be surprised if this work turns into a 10k one-shot. No, it's not the next couple chapters of Steadfast Sky, that's percolating on the back burner for now. I'm talking about a prequel and standalone thing, Fostering Intelligence.

Art: The Legend of Hearts and Hooves

When Sweetie Belle read the origin story of Hearts and Hooves, this comic popped right into my head. I thought someone else would have done this before me, but I guess not?

Comic after das break!

Babble: And then Nothing Happened

1) Four papers and a presentation due this week

2) Writing an entry for that FIMfiction contest

3) Plotting out next arc of Steadfast Sky a bit more carefully than normal

Adds up to a whole lot of nothing to show for myself this week. Especially since I cant post what I'm writing for FIMfiction... There's a quick comic I want to write, so that may pop up over the weekend, to make up for lack of chapter.

Happy Valentimes! ... A day late! Yay!

Still Reading: Eternal

Nothing ever starts well. Never, ever ever. Ever. Unless, it's like, a professional book where somebody has gone over the beginning a billion million times and knows exactly where things are supposed to be, where they're supposed to be.

I think, a major problem I had with Eternal when it first came out, is that, at times, it was just so damn vauge and dreamlike, a level removed from reality. Where it was going and what it was trying to say was somewhere in this fog, and all the reader could do is wonder what the ever loving hell the setup is trying to set up.

But when the story became about actual dreams and mindscapes, that writing style stopped becoming a hindrance. It actually bolstered the mood of the world, the flow of it. You are reading a particularly coherent, yet still inherently removed from reality, dream. You wander through the images presented, unable to see the path, but press on anyway.

So, I think Eternal gets a revised score. The score is now: A Vat of Choco-Carmel (Minus The Innuendo)

Also: How do you write 30k words in five days?!

The Steadfast Sky 15 & 16

I have no idea how this got done.

On the other hand.

Every time I open up my notes folder to double check what exactly I'm doing, up pops this message:
You are writing My Little Pony fanfiction. Continue?
AND I ALWAYS CLICK YES. Because the only two options are yes, and hells yes, and I worry that the hells yes is some sort of cancel button in disguise.

HAVE SOME DELICIOUS AND QUICK SETUP, because I've got to stop eating cookies while I write! SUGAR COMBO RUSH X 12348912345189!!!!

When I calm down, I'll probably edit this more.

Pony Personality Test!

This was totally up on EqD, any my first response was:

Which pony is Discord?

Of course I had to see the results for all three of the Bringers, but this question... it fascinated me.

Babble: Wander the Earth

So, midweek blog doldrums, because doldrums is a cooler word than nothings. I think I'm going to talk about writing and conventions and theory and stuff, because the internet needs more people with opinions! Maybe this'll be regular, maybe this'll be terrible. But, it's more content, so woo!

I like.

Wander the Earth.

Stuff.

Good Reads: Anthropology

Archive

I've been following this work for a while, but have been incredibly hesitant to post about it. Because if it wasn't fanfiction, it would be SEVERELY lacking in important elements that make up a well-written story. The events of the story are solid, and the characterization of Lyra is entertaining. But there is nothing else to this work.

Its formatted like a bare-bones draft of a story. You can get the gist of everything else, but it is desperately in need of world detail, of character detail, of style and flair. I'm not getting a strong impression of any of the other characters, and no one aside from Lyra moves into three dimensions. Rarely to they even make it to two. The plotting is good, but every other aspect of it is token to the point of meaninglessness. I don't even think the author is attempting to make anything more than a character study, and if I attempted to approach discussion from an angle other than that, I would bomb the hell out of this piece.

But for people who just want a good story, a good character, and can easily accept lack of the rest, I can offer a recommendation. I mean, picky pony me reads it, despite the flaws. That's gotta mean something.

Score: I like Lyra's Plot

The Steadfast Sky 13 & 14

Writing Luna is wierd. Very, very wierd. With Discord and Celestia, I mash out the rough draft and refine thier voices through editing. With Luna, I get her voice immidiatly in the rough, and there's very little left to edit.
I don't know if that's a good thing or not! It's certainly not a time saver, because I agonize over the draft anyway, panicking that I can't find anything to change. And things are paced all wrong and she's not that introspective, and auuuug!

LUNA!
WHY DO YOU DO THIS TO ME?!
...
Do I panic like this for every chapter? God, I am only writing fanfiction. Light and silly fanfiction.

On another note: Yeesh, I did, yet did not realize how quick of a read these chapters are. I wanted them to be breif but... yeah, I'm glad I'm bumping up the word count per week to under 10k.

Midweek Nothings

I feel kind've guilty, I should be updating the blog more during the week, and not just have updates crammed all in the weekend. Maybe I'll come up with a new feature, or something. Like... I dunno, speed writing. Or some art. Or more Good Reads

In the meantime, here's a surrealist valentine!

Oranges!
